Doi Suthep-Pui is only a forty minute drive from downtown Chiangmai. Early pick up from your hotel and the first stop will be made at the Headquarter Park at about 1,200 meters above the sea level. Many birds both resident and migrant can be seen here all year round. But this park is overlooked, though. You can find these birds; Asian Emerald Dove, Forest Wagtail, White-rumped Sahna, Small Niltava, Hil Blue Flycatcher, Great Tit, Scarlet Minivet, Maroon Oriole, Black-naped Oriole, Oriental Cuckoo, Velvet-fonted Nuthatch, Blue-bearded Bee-eater, Great Barbet, Speckled Piculet, Long-tailedc Broadbill, Bar-wibnged Flycatcher-Shrike, Black-winged Cuckoo-Shrike, Red-whiskered bulbul, Sooty-headed bulbul, Puff-throated Bulbul, Blue-winged Minla, Blue-winged Leafbird, Black-throated Sunbird, Asian Fairly-bluebird, Yellow-cheeked Tit. |

Next spot s at San Koo near the summit of the park where we can see these birds; Chestnut-bellied Rockthrush, Long-tailed Broadbill, Puff-throated Babbler, Rufous-winged Fulvetta, White-bellied Yuhina, White-browed Shrike- Babbler, Chestnut-fronted Shrike Babbler, Grey-backed Shrike, Brown Shrike, Yellow-bellied Warbler, Golden-spectacled Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler, Mountian Tailorbird, White-tailed Robin, Daurian Redstart, Grey Bushchat, Blue Whistling Thrush, Long-tailed Thrush, Dark-sided Thrush, Red-throated Flycatcher, Rufous-gorgetted Flycatcher, Little Pied Flycatcher, Grey-headed Flycatcher, Verdifer Flycatcher, Black-naped Monarch and so on.
We can proceed the summit on foot while doing Birdwatching along the way. You might see Ruby-cheeked Sunbird, Blue-winged Minla, Black-throated Sunbird, Little Spiderhunter, Streaked Spiderhunter, Japanese White-eye, Chestnut-flanked White-eye, Oriental White-eye, Common Rosefinch, Chestnut Bunting, Crested Bunting, Yellow-breasted Bunting, Plain Flowerpecker etc.

On the way back and if time permits you can do birding on field and marsh birds around Chiangmai. At the Agricultural Research about 20 minute drive from downtown you can find these birds; Green Bee-eater, Greater Coucal, Long-tailed Shrike, Ashy Wood Swallow, Brown Shrike, Asian-barred Owlet, Indian Nightjar, Large-tailed Nightjar, White-breasted Kingfisher, Indian Roller, Common Hoopoe, Coppersmith Barbet and so on. |
